COVID-19 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic created unprecedented needs across Greece, placing significant pressure on hospitals, social welfare organisations and organisations that continued to provide daily support to people at increased risk.

From the first days of the crisis, Desmos mobilised to identify the new and constantly evolving needs. We initially reached out to 600 organisations across our network, gaining an immediate overview of the shortages and priorities emerging as a result of the pandemic.

Our response developed across multiple areas, from protecting those most at risk to supporting the day-to-day operations of social welfare organisations and hospitals.

One of the largest initiatives involved the nationwide distribution of 2,253,430 surgical masks to 280 non-profit organisations supporting older people, children, people with chronic illnesses, people with disabilities, people experiencing homelessness and other vulnerable groups across Greece.

At the same time, more than 13,000 bottles of hand sanitiser were distributed to 80 organisations and 512,600 disposable gloves to 64 organisations, helping protect both beneficiaries and those providing essential care and support on the front line.

Our support also extended to the increased operational needs of organisations. 49 non-profit organisations received food supplies, while 21 child protection organisations across Greece were equipped with 514 technology devices and 19 household appliances, helping them adapt to the exceptional circumstances created by the pandemic.

We also responded to specialised healthcare needs by providing medical equipment to three hospitals: a portable X-ray machine to Penteli Children’s General Hospital, a specialised air filtration system to P. & A. Kyriakou Children’s Hospital, and a bronchoscope to G. Gennimatas General Hospital.

Throughout the crisis, our response continued to adapt to emerging needs, ranging from protective and medical equipment to food, personal hygiene products, technology equipment, prepared meals and transportation to facilitate at-home support for older people.
