The story behind the campaign that launched the program
How a crowdfunding campaign launched the “Desmos for Youth” program.
The “Desmos for Youth” program was born out of a global wave of solidarity. In the summer of 2015, at the height of the Greek crisis, British citizen Thom Feeney launched a crowdfunding campaign aimed at funding jobs for young people in Greece within nonprofit organisations and initiatives with a social impact. The campaign made international headlines (Guardian, 2015), and within a few days, 13,398 people from around the world had contributed, raising €289,119.
This funding supported 15 jobs for young people at nonprofit organisations in Greece for a full year. Through this initiative, young people gained professional experience and contributed to initiatives with a meaningful social impact, while the organisations gained the opportunity to expand and offer even greater support to local communities.
This initiative served as the starting point for the “Desmos for Youth” program, which continues to support young people and strengthen social organisations in Greece.
